Privacy Policy

WhatDeviceForMe is a free device recommendation site. You do not need an account and we do not ask for your name, email address or payment details to use the quiz. The only personal data we ever hold is an email address you choose to give us for an optional price-drop alert, described below.

What we collect

• Quiz answers. Your country, budget band, must-have features and intended use are sent to our backend so an AI model can produce recommendations. They are stored with the generated result so a shared result link keeps working.
• Approximate location. We look up an approximate country from your IP address to pre-fill the country step. You can change the country at any time.
• Usage events. Anonymous page views, quiz steps and outbound link clicks, identified only by a random session identifier stored in your browser.
• Price-drop alerts (optional). If you ask to be emailed when a device gets cheaper, we store your email address together with the device, country and (optional) target price. We only start sending after you click the confirmation link; unconfirmed requests are deleted after 48 hours. Alerts are used solely to send you that device's price drops (at most one email a week) and are deleted automatically after 6 months, or immediately when you use the "stop this alert" link in any email.
• Quiz insights (only with your consent). If you accept analytics cookies, we also keep one anonymous summary per quiz session — device category, country, budget, main use, wanted features and which of the three suggestions you clicked — to see which recommendations work. It contains no IP address, email or free text and is not kept if you reject non-essential cookies.
• Technical data. IP address and request metadata, used for rate limiting and abuse prevention.

Cookies and consent

Essential storage (your language, your consent choice, the random session id) is always active. Advertising and analytics cookies are set to denied by default using Google Consent Mode v2, and Google AdSense, Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager are only downloaded after you accept them in the cookie banner. If you reject, those scripts are never requested. You can change your mind by clearing site data for this domain.

• Google AdSense — advertising, loaded only with consent.
• Google Analytics / Google Tag Manager — measurement, loaded only with consent.
• Geo-IP lookup — approximate country for the country step.
• Supabase — our backend and database host, which processes the data above on our behalf.
• Lovable (email delivery) — sends the confirmation and price-drop emails on our behalf and manages the unsubscribe link.
• AI providers — your quiz answers (never personal identifiers) are sent to the model that generates your picks.

Affiliate links

Buy links on results, deals and guide pages may be affiliate links, including the Amazon Associates programme. If you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Following such a link hands you over to the retailer, whose own privacy policy then applies.

Retention

Recommendation records and anonymous usage events are kept so shared links keep working and so we can monitor quality and cost. Rate-limiting records are short-lived. Price-alert email addresses are kept for at most 6 months from sign-up.

Your choices

You can reject non-essential cookies, change your country, and stop using the site at any time. Every price-alert email contains a link that stops the alert and deletes your address straight away.
